Matter Certification

Last Updated on : 2024-02-28 07:53:29download

Tuya’s Matter solution helps you get your product Matter-certified with less overhead and short time-to-market in order to get the most out of the Matter ecosystem. With a suite of Matter solutions, you can also integrate with big platforms like Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home at the same time. As of November 2022, the Thread-based smart lighting products and Wi-Fi based smart sockets and lighting products, and wired gateways get Matter certified.

This topic describes what Matter is and information about Matter certification.

What is Matter?

Matter, introduced by Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in 2021, is a standard for the application layer. Amazon, Google, and Apple have all announced that their smart home ecosystem Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit will be compatible with Matter. The Matter 1.0 standard has been officially released by CSA in October 2022.

Matter is a unifying, IP-based connectivity protocol built on proven technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet.

Matter Certification

Matter aims to reduce fragmentation in the smart device market with an industry-unifying standard. It allows all smart home devices to work with each other over a local network, regardless of the brand.

Matter-certified product types

CSA classifies two types of products that can apply for Matter certification.

Type Description
Hardware Device Certification A Matter hardware device refers to hardware that can provide capabilities of a Mater device type, which applies to both end products and modules with complete functionality. For example, sensors, switches, refrigerators, and lighting.
Software Component Certification A Matter software component refers to software that runs on an operating system supported by CSA (such as TVs, mobile phones, and Raspberry Pi). For example, apps and OTA providers.

A single Matter device can be integrated with both product types and applies for both Hardware Device Certification and Software Component Certification. For example, TVs and central controls.

Matter certification process

  1. Become a CSA Member.

  2. Request a vendor ID.

  3. Develop a product using Tuya’s Matter solution.

  4. Select network transport.

Check if the vendor has obtained certification for its wireless solution from relevant organizations, such as Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth Qualification Body, and Thread Group. A physical layer self-test report is required for the network interface. For more information, see What should I prepare to apply for Matter certification for end products?

  5. Select a CSA-authorized Tuya partner lab to have your product tested. Your test provider will submit the final test result to CSA.

  6. Before submitting your application, be sure to have these documents ready: Declaration of Conformity (DoC), Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS), Network Transport Attestation, and Security Attestation.

  7. CSA reviews your application. After your product certification is approved, you will receive a formal certificate. Only Matter-certified devices can carry the Matter logo.

  8. CSA enters the certified product in the Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL). Certified products can be found at CSA website.

    Matter Certification

Smart products involved in Matter internal testing (including the TEX and SVE stages) can get a pre-certification for Matter.

CSA membership

To apply for Matter certification, your company or organization must be a CSA member. If you join CSA as a member of Zigbee Alliance, you still enjoy the benefits applicable to your membership level.

Membership type

There are four types of membership categories at the CSA:

  • Promoter

  • Participant

  • Adopter

  • Associate

Pricing (USD) Associate Adopter Participant Promoter
    Annual fee 0 7,000 20,000 10,500

There are no annual fees for Associate membership. An Associate member is eligible to receive a certification transfer and is not eligible for product testing and certification application. For more information, visit CSA website.

Certification paths

The following description applies to Zigbee and Matter certification:

Certification path
Description
Standard Certification (Testing) Certifies a single product.
Certification by Similarity Allows a product that is derived from a previously certified product to be considered for certification based on its similarity to this certified product depending on the differences between the two.
Certification Transfer Program Enables Alliance Participants and Promoters to offer their certified products to customers for re-branding/white labeling while maintaining the certified status of those products.
Product Family Certification Certifies a product family, including multiple family member products of the family on a single certification application, based on the parent product within the family. The differences between the variants must not affect the conformance of the family member products to Alliance Specifications. For example, family member products with different regional power plug variants. Certification fees:
  • Participant and Promoter: USD4,000
  • Adopter: USD8,000

Certification Transfer Program and Product Family Certification Program do not apply to mobile apps.

The following diagram describes different certification paths.

Matter Certification

Recognized protocols

Matter recognizes the following communication protocols. The chips, modules, or end products that use these protocols should get certified by the relevant standards organization.

Organization Protocol version
Bluetooth SIG Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) v4.0 or later.
Ethernet Compliance A self-test report for IEEE Physical Medium Attachment (PMA).
Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi 4 (IEEE 802.11n) or later.
Thread Group Thread 1.3.0

Dependent Certification Program (DCP) is launched for Matter hardware certification to denote communication layer support for Matter implementation.

During the process of Matter implementation, be sure not to modify the DCP-certified chips and modules so that the end products integrated with the certified hardware can inherit the certification to apply for Matter certification.

FAQs

1. Can a module be Matter-certified? Can an end product receive a certification transfer from Tuya’s Matter-certified solutions?

  • CSA does not support module-based certification transfer.

  • If your end product uses the hardware design solution and software that is identical to Tuya’s Matter-certified products, including:

    • Identical device type
    • Identical cluster
    • Identical hardware
    • Identical firmware

You can apply for a certification transfer and make a change to the product enclosure. If you have fine-tuned hardware, check with CSA to see if you can apply for certification by similarity first and then do a certification transfer.

2. What should I prepare to apply for Matter certification for end products?

Matter is an application layer protocol, so take care of the followings:

  1. The wireless solution that your end product uses should be certified by the relevant standards organization, such as Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, and Thread Group. Search for the certified products:

  2. A signal consistency test report of the physical layer is required for a network interface. The following lists the test items of a 100 Mbps network interface:

Test item Range Test value Result
AOI Template Fit the template - -
    Output Voltage (+Vout) 950 mV to 1,050 mV - -
Output Voltage (-Vout) -950 mV to -1,050 mV - -
    Amplitude Symmetry 0.98 to 1.02 - -
    Rise Time (+ve) 3 ns to 5 ns - -
Rise Time (-ve) 3 ns to 5 ns - -
    Fall Time (+ve) 3 ns to 5 ns - -
Fall Time (-ve) 3 ns to 5 ns - -
    Rise/Fall Symmetry (+ve) < 500 ps - -
    Rise/Fall Symmetry (-ve) < 500 ps - -
    Overshoot (+ve) < 5% - -
    Overshoot (-ve) < 5% - -
    Transmit Jitter (+ve) < 1.4 ns - -
    Transmit Jitter (-ve) < 1.4 ns - -
    Distortion (Duty Cycle) < 500 ps (±250 ps) - -

3. Can the end product that is among the first to get Matter certified in internal testing perform certification transfer?

A certification transfer is possible only after you complete the certification application process and get the official Matter certification.

4. Are there templates for Network Transport Attestation and Security Attestation?

CSA provides the template:

5. Can I apply for Matter certification for a mobile app?

Yes, you can. A mobile app belongs to software components. Certification Transfer Program and Product Family Certification Program do not apply to mobile apps.

6. What is the classification of software component types?

There are four types:

  • Commissioner (Section 5 and 6 of Matter Specification)
  • Controller (Section 1.3 of Matter Specification)
  • OTA Provider (Section 2.4 of Matter Device Library)
